Egypt on Wednesday showed keen interest in buying Tejas light combat aircraft, radars, military helicopters and military equipment from India as the two sides agreed to cooperate in the field of defence. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi arrived here on Tuesday on a three-day visit. He will attend the Republic Day celebrations on Thursday as the chief guest.

According to sources, Egypt is considering buying Akash missiles and smart anti-airfield systems from India. The United States, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Argentina and the Philippines are also among the countries that have shown interest in India’s Tejas aircraft.

During their talks PM Modi and Sisi decided to elevate India-Egypt bilateral cooperation to the level of strategic partnership. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said that one of the major highlights of today’s talks between the two leaders was to elevate the bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership.

He said both sides also resolved to expand defense cooperation in the areas of training, exercises, industrial partnership and platforms and equipment. At the same time, in the last few years, the overall defense relationship between the two sides has been strengthened. In July last year, the Indian Air Force participated in a month-long strategic leadership program in Egypt with three Su-30 MKI jets and two C-17 transport aircraft. In September, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh paid a three-day visit to the African country.

India is keen to expand its ties with Egypt, which is a major player in the politics of both the Arab world as well as Africa. It is also seen as a major gateway to markets in Africa and Europe.
