Earthquake Earthquake 6.4 Jolts Jan Mayen Island

According to the National Center for Sisamology, the magnitude 6.4 earthquake on the Richter scale shocked the Jan Mayen Island area on Monday.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km, making it susceptible to afteroxic.

“EQ of M: 6.4, on: 10/03/2025 08:03:3:3 IST, Lat: 71.22N, Long: 8.01 W, Depth: 10 km, Location: Jaan Meen Maine island area,” NCS said.

Such shallow earthquakes are more dangerous than deep people due to their greater energy release to the surface of the Earth, causing increased loss to strong ground tremors and structures and casualties than deep earthquakes, which lose energy because they travel to the surface.

About 1,000 km west of the mainland Norway, the island is 53 km long and covers 377 km2. As recently exploded on the island from volcanic Beeronberg (2,277 m) in 1985 – the world’s northern volcano and Norway’s only active volcano above sea level. There is a continuous threat to new explosions and earthquakes.

Jaan Mayene is an active volcanic island, located with the North-Atlantic Ridge of Iceland. It is closely associated with the geodionamic procedures associated with the conversation between the Jan Mayain Fracture Zone (JMFZ) and the lines of the colloidal and Mohans.

Despite the significant tectonic activity expressed by the frequent occurrence of moderate to larger earthquakes, there has been a lack of detailed relations between individual events and motivational defects with JMFZ.

The island is located at a ridge-cost intersection, which can explain the origin of the island and the related volcano. In addition, the new data suggests a series of Mohan’s reset offset segment, which overlapping in the N Ecolon pattern.

Tectonic geologists have identified mass maayen as a microcontinent, which has experienced significant deformation around its boundaries due to sea-floor spreading and formation of new plate boundaries.
