DU News: Without Hindi, studying in Delhi University can be difficult, know what is the plan of the university

Delhi University Hindi Subject Compulsory: A new change may be coming for the students of Delhi University (DU). If a proposal is approved then reading ‘History of Hindi Literature’ may become mandatory in General Elective (GE) subjects. These papers are: Sahitya Lochan, History of Hindi Literature Part 1 and History of Hindi Literature Part 2. This proposal will be placed in the Executive Council meeting on January 17.
The Hindi department wants all colleges to include three Hindi literature papers in GE. Be it English Honours, Economics or Political Science, students will be able to opt for these papers. Imagine, an engineering student reading Kabir’s couplets or a medical student engrossed in Premchand’s stories.

DU has already tried to make Hindi study compulsory or introduce Hindi examination. This had drawn criticism from many people, especially students from non-Hindi speaking states. Many argue that such policies ignore the linguistic diversity of the country. This puts unnecessary burden on students who do not know Hindi. This proposal will be considered in the meeting on January 17. This decision may lead to changes in the academic structure for the coming semester.

“The objective of this proposal is to introduce students to the richness of Hindi literature and ensure that they understand our cultural heritage in depth,” a senior Hindi department official told PTI.
By completing three GE papers, students will be able to pursue a minor degree in Hindi along with their main subject. Suppose, a student is studying in English Honors. he/she can also pursue a minor degree in Hindi along with his/her degree. The department also says that this will help the students to understand Hindi literature and its beauty. Even if they are not studying it as a main subject.

If this proposal is approved, changes can be made in the choice of students by including ‘History of Hindi Literature’ in GE subjects. Especially those students who want to learn different subjects. It is going to be very interesting to see how this change affects the academic environment of DU. Will it increase interest in Hindi literature or create controversy? This decision will be important for the future of DU.
