From Punjab to abroad – wonderful student life

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s education started from Punjab. he/she passed the Panjab University Semi-Matriculation examination in 1948. After this in 1952 Punjab University he/she completed his/her graduation in economics and post graduation degree in 1954.

Cambridge University: Manmohan Singh’s extraordinary talent also gave him/her the opportunity to study at Cambridge University, where he/she obtained a first class degree in Economic Tripos in 1957.

Oxford University: In the year 1962, he/she went to Nuffield College, Oxford University where he/she did D.Phil in Economics. Earned the degree of. The subject of his/her research was critical evaluation of India’s trade policies.

From being a teacher to becoming RBI Governor – a wonderful career

Dr. Singh started his/her career as a teacher. he/she taught at Panjab University and Delhi School of Economics. his/her expertise soon extended to international institutions and work in the UNCTAD Secretariat. Later he/she became the Secretary General of the South Commission in Geneva.
Dr. Singh also contributed to the administrative structure of India by serving as Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Commerce, Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.

14th Prime Minister of the country

In the year 2004, Dr. Manmohan Singh became the 14th Prime Minister of India. he/she led the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for two terms i.e. 10 years. Apart from this, Dr. Singh’s parliamentary career lasted for decades. he/she represented Assam 5 times in the Rajya Sabha before moving to Rajasthan in 2019. he/she was also the leader of the opposition and played an important role in parliamentary proceedings despite not contesting the Lok Sabha elections.

Saved the country from economic crisis

In the year 1991, at the time of India’s serious economic crisis, Dr. Singh was appointed by Prime Minister P.V. Appointed Finance Minister in Narasimha Rao’s government. he/she rescued the country from crisis by implementing major reforms. Implemented reforms like liberalizing trade policies, abolishing license raj and promoting financial discipline.

In the historic budget speech of 1991, he/she had said the words of Victor Hugo which are popular even today, ‘No power on earth can stop an idea whose time has come.’

Dr. Manmohan’s talent got respect all over the world

Former PM Manmohan Singh was honored with many prestigious awards like Padma Vibhushan, Asiamoney Award for Finance Minister of the Year, Euromoney Award for Finance Minister of the Year and Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Award.

Prestigious institutions such as Cambridge and Oxford also awarded him/her honorary doctorates in recognition of his/her achievements and influence.
