Donald Trump’s ‘election promise’ will cost 23 lakh people jobs, but how?

US President Donald Trump: Donald Trump has returned to America. he/she took oath as the 47th President of the country on Monday, after which major changes are being made. Donald Trump has expelled America from the World Health Organization through executive order. Many similar decisions have also been taken. However, the biggest decision to be taken by the Trump government is regarding government jobs, due to which the jobs of millions of people are in danger.
According to USA Today, Donald Trump’s proposal to dismantle the Department of Education (DoE) and overhaul key agencies like the Department of Justice and Health and Human Services could put the jobs of more than 2.3 million government employees at risk. At the heart of these plans are the ‘Department of Government Debit’ (DOGE), whose job is to cut government spending. Even during the election campaign, Trump had talked about cutting expenses, if he/she does so, 23 lakh people may lose their jobs.

Where do government employees work?

Many people think that most government employees work in the capital, Washington DC, but this is not the case. According to the US Office of Personnel Management, only about 15% of federal government employees work in the nation’s capital. Approximately 85% of the workforce is employed throughout the United States. These people are working in diverse roles like postal workers, civil engineers and TSA agents.

These employees are primarily represented by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE). According to official figures, around 7.50 lakh government employees are included in AFGE.

DOGE has also given a cut plan?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy are taking charge of DOGE. It has been entrusted with the task of streamlining government work. Trump says DOGE wants to implement large-scale structural reforms, working with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget. DOGE chief Musk had suggested that he/she could cut $2 trillion from the federal budget. To do this, many agencies will be closed, due to which lakhs of people will lose their jobs.
