Donald Trump stirs controversy with territorial claims on Greenland, Panama Canal and Canada

US President-elect Donald Trump has sparked controversy by expressing interest in acquiring Greenland, Canada and the Panama Canal in a series of social media posts, citing national security and economic benefits. his/her comments drew sharp criticism from the leaders of Denmark and Panama.

In the latest social media post, Donald Trump’s son Eric Trump posted a photo showing Trump buying Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal and wrote, “We’re way behind!!!”

Recently, Trump expressed interest in Greenland and said that US ownership and control of the territory is an “imperative requirement” for national security and global freedom.

“For purposes of national security and liberty around the world, the United States feels that ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

After Trump’s comments on Greenland, Danish opposition Conservative Party lawmaker Rasmus Jarlov said “dictators” threaten to take over other countries’ territory.

While sharing a post on X, Jarlov wrote, “Don’t know if this is a joke or not.” But definitely not funny. Canada has been threatened for a week. Now Denmark. Greenland is Danish. It has been around since 1380 and will continue to do so. It is undisputed, with concrete treaties signed and not at all open to negotiation. Dictators threaten to take over the territory of other countries. “Free democratic countries don’t do this.”

Earlier on Monday, Trump had also posted a secret message on Truth Social about the Panama Canal. he/she posted a photo with the American flag flying over the Panama Canal, echoing his/her threat to Panama not to let the canal fall into the “wrong hands.”

he/she wrote, “Welcome to the United States Canal! The Panama Canal is considered a vital national asset for the United States because of its vital role in the US economy and national security. If both the moral and legal principles of this generous gesture of giving are not followed, we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us completely and without question. Please direct Panamanian authorities accordingly!”

Following Trump’s comments on the Panama Canal, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino responded to Trump, saying, “The Panama Canal and every square meter of surrounding area belongs to Panama and will always remain.”

Earlier, Trump had created a stir by calling making Canada the 51st US state a “great idea”, as Canadian leader Justin Trudeau faces a domestic political crisis over fears of a possible tariff war with Trump .

“Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st state,” Trump posted on his/her Truth social platform. “They will save massively on taxes and military security. I think it is a great idea. 51ST STATE!!!” he/she added.
