The real name of Zubeida Begum was Vidya Rani

Zubeida Begum was also known as Vidya Rani. She was the daughter of a Muslim businessman Qasimbhai Mehta. Mother Faiza Bai was a singer. Zubeida converted to Islam according to the customs of Arya Samaj and became Vidya Rani. Then she married Maharaj Hanwant Singh of Jodhpur.

Her father forced her to marry Maharaj Hanwant of Jodhpur

It is said that this marriage was done forcefully by her father. After marriage on 17 December 1950, she came to Jodhpur as the younger queen of Hanwant Singh. In the year 1951, Zubeida gave birth to a son, who was named Rao Raja Hukum Singh. Zubeida was already married, from whom she had another son, whose name was Khalid Mohammed.

Karisma Kapoor played the role, Zubeida’s son wrote the story

Khalid Mohammed is the same person who wrote the screenplay of Karisma Kapoor starrer ‘Zubaida’. This film, which came in 2001, was based on the life of his/her mother Zubeida. Karisma played the role of Zubeida in it. Khalid Mohammed is a director, journalist, screenwriter and film editor.

It is said that Maharaj Hanwant Singh left his/her Umaid Bhawan Palace after marrying Zubeida, and gave her the status of the younger queen of Jodhpur. When Hanwant Singh took Zubeida to Jodhpur’s palace Umaid Bhawan, the royal family refused to accept a Muslim actress as their daughter-in-law. Then Hanwant Singh left the Umaid Bhawan Palace and started living in the Mehrangarh Fort with Rani Zubeida.

But just a year later, both of them died in a plane crash. This death created a lot of uproar. Zubeida was accused, even though she too had died in this plane crash. But even after her death, Zubeida was defamed. At that time, Zubeida and Hanwant’s son Rao Raja Hukum Singh was just one year old, and he/she was brought up by his/her step mother Rani Krishna Kumari. Hanwant Singh married Krishna Kumari in the year 1943. Krishna Kumari was only 16 years old at that time.

According to a report in ‘Dainik Bhaskar’, a few years after the death of Zubeida and Maharaj Hanwant Singh, their son’s head was cut off and the body was thrown on the road. There was a lot of uproar then. In fact, in the year 1974, Rao Raja was charged with attempted murder for pointing a pistol at a police officer twice and threatening to kill him/her.

Rajasthan court had dismissed the case

This case was dismissed by the Rajasthan High Court. It was also said that it could be a criminal threat, but it was not an attempt to murder because Hukum Singh did not use a weapon. But in 1981, Rao Raja’s body was found, whose head was cut off. 20 marks were found on the body. Some said that he/she committed suicide, while others said that he/she was killed due to royal rivalry. Even today, the mystery over Hukum Singh’s death deepens.

Zubeida’s spirit roams in Umaid Bhawan Palace, she was imprisoned in school

At the same time, it is claimed that even today the spirit of Zubeida roams in Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhawan Palace. Local people also believe the same. They said that Zubeida’s spirit keeps wandering around the palace. A few years ago, her spirit was imprisoned in a room of a royal school. Many rooms of that school were then locked with tantra-mantra and big locks. Those rooms are still closed today.
