Why is Doctor’s Day celebrated on 1st July?
In India, July 1 is celebrated as National Doctors Day i.e. National Doctors Day. This day is celebrated in the memory of the great doctor of the country and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. He was born on 1 July 1882 and died on this day in 1962 at the age of 80. Bidhan Chandra Roy is counted among the great doctors of the country. Not only this, he has made an important contribution in the field of medicine all over the world.

- In the honor of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, National Doctors Day is celebrated every year on 1 July in India since 1991.

Who was Bidhan Chandra Roy?
Bidhan Chandra Roy was born on 1 July 1982 in Patna city of Bihar. His father’s name was Prakash Chandra. Bidhan Chandra Roy was the youngest of his five siblings. He completed his medical studies from Presidency College, Kolkata. Thereafter he obtained FRCS and MRCP degrees from London.
According to the records, being an Indian, he was not admitted to the hospital in London earlier, but Dr Bidhan was not one to lose heart and kept applying. Eventually his application was accepted in the 30th time. Dr. Roy was so meritorious that within two years he acquired the degree of physician and surgeon simultaneously. Bidhan Chandra Roy returned to India in 1911 and began his career as a government doctor in Sealdah.

Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was a freedom fighter
Bidhan Chandra Roy was a doctor as well as a social worker, agitator, freedom fighter and politician. He actively participated in the freedom struggle of the country. On Gandhiji’s insistence, he entered active politics and joined the Indian National Congress party. He became the second Chief Minister of Bengal after Praful Chandra Ghosh in 1948 and remained in this position till his death on 1 July 1962. He is also considered the architect of West Bengal.
One thing is very famous about Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy that whatever income he earned, he used to donate everything. To pay respect and tribute to his selfless spirit of serving the society and the country, his birthday and death anniversary on July 1 is celebrated as National Doctors Day.
