Do not ignore cough, Health Ministry told what to do-what not to do to avoid HMPV virus


Two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) virus have been reported in Karnataka. Regarding this, all the states in India have issued guidelines for the safety of the public. Information is given on what to do and what not to do to avoid the virus.

The Union Health Ministry said in a statement that these two cases have come to light as part of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)’s efforts to monitor and control respiratory diseases across the country.

HMPV is a common respiratory virus. It usually causes mild cold-like symptoms. Studies show that it has been widespread in human populations since the 1970s, although it was first identified by scientists in 2001. This virus is responsible for 4–16% of acute respiratory infections worldwide.

In severe cases, it may take longer to feel better. However, long-term symptoms such as cough may take longer to go away.
