Banarasi and Kanjeevaram silk is the first choice of women in Indian handloom sarees, even among modern women, there is a craze for silk for a classy and elegant look. But, both Kanjeevaram and Banarasi with handloom work look almost similar. It sometimes becomes difficult to differentiate between the two. On the occasion of festival, women who like variety of sarees want to buy Kanjeevaram instead of common Banarasi silk, but due to lack of information, they buy Banarasi silk by mistake considering it to be Kanjeevaram. Identity of Kanjeevaram and Banarasi

Kanjeevaram sarees belong to the city of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, South India. Whereas if we talk about Banarasi saree, its name itself shows that it is the identity of Banaras of Uttar Pradesh. The history of Banarasi sarees is said to be 2000 years old. Due to the work of pure gold threads, Kanjeevaram sarees are heavier than Banarasi silk and their price is also higher.

Kanjeevaram sarees are known for their lustrous texture, thickness and strength. These sarees usually have traditional South Indian designs. Figures of gods, goddesses, temples and natural things are carved. Whereas Banarasi sarees have designs of bells, flowers, leaves, paisley etc. of the Mughal period.

Both Kanjivaram and Banarasi silk sarees have zari work. But, the difference is that Kanjeevaram has pure gold or silver zari. Whereas Banarasi sarees are made using silk and zari. These have different patterns. However, if you want, you can get work done with gold threads on Banarasi saree also.

Kanjeevaram sarees are usually made of pure mulberry silk which is soft to touch. Whereas Banarasi saree has Banarasi silk and zari work. Not only this, when light falls on Banarasi Silk, its fabric emits different types of shine. Also, when the threads are scratched, red silk is visible from inside.
