‘Discrimination’ of top US universities like MIT, only children of the rich are getting admission, who made the allegation?

Study in America News: Education provides equal opportunities for everyone to progress. But this does not seem to be happening in America, because the children of people who have immense money are getting admission in good colleges, even if their marks are not enough for admission. In fact, during the hearing of an ongoing case against 17 universities of America, it was alleged that children of rich and influential people get concession in admission in some big institutions of the country.
The lawsuit was filed in Chicago federal court in 2022, accusing universities of ‘price-fixing’. During the hearing, it was told that the then President of Georgetown University had put the name of a student in his/her ‘President’s List’. The president met this student and her wealthy father at a conference in Idaho. This conference is also called ‘Summer Camp of Billionaires’. Many cases of admission through similar connections have come to light.

Admission in institutes like MIT also through connections

However, it has always been believed that influence is used for admission. But the proceedings of this case have given an opportunity to highlight those decisions of university heads and admission officers, which were often kept secret. This shows how universities give admission to rich kids who are not qualified, just because their parents have good connections and can make big donations in the future. This raises questions on fairness.

Stuart Schmill, dean of admissions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), wrote in a 2018 email that the university admitted four of the six students recommended by then-chairman of the board Robert Millard, including two students we knew were true candidates. Do not give admission. The remaining two students did not get admission because they were not strongly recommended.

In the email, Schmill said Millard was wary of downplaying his/her influence on admissions decisions. But he/she said the chairman also sent notes on all six students. Then he/she met Shmil to discuss what he/she felt was more important for admission. Such cases have come to light in many prestigious institutions of the country, about which there is a lot of discussion.
