During that time I saw Kashmir very closely and in a different way. The correct picture of that situation was not shown in the news channels. I found that there is a huge difference between the army and the local people there. I thought it was imaginary, but what if these two parties come together somewhere? That’s where the idea of ’Kahwa’ came from. When this film got a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, I felt that my hard work had paid off.

Independent filmmaker has many challenges

‘Being an independent filmmaker has its own challenges and when you have to make a meaningful film, the challenge increases. I started my career from 2007. I even had to sell my apartment to fund my films. Actually, the producer of that film of mine pulled out at the last moment, so ultimately I had to sell my apartment to pay all the dues. I have suffered a lot of losses in filmmaking.

I was the executive producer in that film. Even then I was struggling with financial constraints. That film got stuck, but I never stopped anyone’s money. Today, when I read somewhere that a producer has frozen people’s money, I start thinking because I have never done that. It has always been my endeavor to ensure that the people associated with our film get their money.

Recently, he/she directed Pan India director SS Rajamouli in an ad campaign. Describing his/her experience, he/she said, ‘I was quite nervous while working with him/her, because working with an actor is different, but It was natural to be nervous about directing a well-known filmmaker like Rajamouli, who is an accomplished technician himself. I had not seen many of his/her films. I had watched one of his/her documentary films on OTT, due to which I had created an amazing connect with him/her.

‘Working with him/her I discovered why he/she is such a great director? Not once did he/she make me feel new or small. Not even once did he/she say that this position would be better or that angle would be right. his/her only concern was that the work be done on time. On the set he/she was a complete director’s actor. I learned a lot from him/her, especially humility and staying down to earth.
