DGP will be on leave before assembly elections in Jharkhand, Election Commission ordered


New Delhi : Before the assembly elections in Jharkhand, the Election Commission has taken a big decision. The Election Commission on Saturday ordered the immediate removal of acting Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Gupta. The commission cited the ‘history’ of complaints against him/her during previous elections. The Election Commission’s decision to remove Gupta has been taken in view of the complaints and action taken against him/her in the previous elections.

Elections will be held in two phases

Elections are to be held in Jharkhand in two phases on 13 and 20 November. Meanwhile, the charge of DGP will be handed over to the most senior DGP level officer in the state. The state government has been directed to submit the list of senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers by October 21, so that the Election Commission can appoint a new DGP. The election results will be announced after counting of votes on November 23.

Compliance report on Gupta’s removal is required by this evening. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Gupta was relieved of his/her duties as ADG (Special Branch) in Jharkhand after he/she was accused of partisan behavior by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). After this he/she was again sent to Delhi and barred from returning to the state till the completion of the election process.

In the 2016 Rajya Sabha elections from Jharkhand, the then Additional DGP Anurag Gupta was accused of misusing his/her position. A departmental inquiry was initiated after the charge sheet was issued against him/her following the Election Commission investigation.
