On November 14, the Supreme Court had agreed to list this petition for urgent hearing. The court was requested to list the petition immediately so that Delhi does not become the most polluted city in the world.

Request for urgent hearing

Senior advocate Aparajita Singh, who has been appointed amicus curiae in the case, had requested the bench for an urgent hearing in view of the prevailing situation in Delhi. Singh had told the bench that he/she had informed the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) about this and it should tell what steps were being taken.

Supreme Court is strict on pollution

The Supreme Court had on November 11 taken serious cognizance of the violation of its order banning burning of firecrackers on Diwali and had said that no religion encourages polluting activities. The court had said that the right to live in a pollution-free environment is a fundamental right of every citizen under Article 21 of the Constitution. The Supreme Court is hearing a petition in which it is seeking a decision to curb air pollution in the national capital and surrounding areas. A request has been made to issue guidelines for this.
