Delhi University: Now do two degree courses simultaneously in DU, University has given these terms and conditions, notification issued

Delhi University (DU) has taken a big decision. Now students will be able to do two degree programs simultaneously. But there is one condition. The first degree has to be done in regular mode from any college or department of DU. The second degree will have to be done in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode from the School of Open Learning. According to the notification of DU, students who have already taken or are going to take admission in DU can take two degrees simultaneously.

Meanwhile, keep in mind that you cannot take two similar degrees at the same time. Meaning you cannot do B.Com (Hons) and B.Com (Pass) simultaneously, even if one degree is in ODL mode. It is clearly written in the notification that, ‘These rules will be applicable only to those students who are doing academic programs other than PhD programme.’

If you want to do two degrees together, you will have to study both the programs separately. This means that for both the programs, it is necessary to attend classes, give internal examinations, submit assignments, give presentations and it is also necessary to follow the promotion rules for both the degrees.

It is necessary to complete mandatory courses:

For UG programmes, students must first complete mandatory courses like Environmental Science (EVS) or Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC) for the program they are enrolled in. If these courses are also required in other degree programs, other courses will be offered in their place.

For example, if a student is pursuing two undergraduate degrees, he/she or she will study AEC languages and EVS courses as part of his/her or her regular programme, while for a second ODL degree, he/she or she can choose either a different AEC language or skill enhancement Course (SEC) or Value Addition Course (VAC).

Regular and ODL Courses:

The Delhi University notification also mentions that to avoid students from studying the same subject twice, they will have to first complete the mandatory courses of the program in which they have taken admission – be it regular or ODL mode. In other programs, other courses will be given in place of the same compulsory courses.

For example, if a student has previously taken admission in a regular programme, he/she/she will have to complete the required courses of that programme. If he/she/she has previously enrolled in an ODL program, he/she/she must first complete the mandatory courses of that program.

Similarly, if a student is pursuing two BA programmes, instead of repeating the same elective (language) course, he/she or she can choose a course from the Open Generic Elective (GE) pool so as not to have to study the same subject again.

The research theme or project work required in the fourth year of the UG program should be different for both the degrees. Additionally, students will not be allowed to combine credits earned from two different programs to obtain a major or minor in any subject.
