Delhi Mayor Election: Mayor’s post vacant even after 2 months of election results, AAP reaches Supreme Court

AAP Goes To Supreme Court: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has once again reached the Supreme Court on the Delhi Municipal Corporation mayor’s election matter. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, presenting the case on behalf of the party, said, even after 2 months of the election results, the post of mayor is vacant.

The lawyer said, nominated councilors are being included in the voting but two MLAs of Aam Aadmi Party are being prevented from voting by being convicted in a criminal case. On this, Chief Justice Chandrachud has talked about hearing the matter tomorrow i.e. on February 8.

The petition was withdrawn from the Supreme Court

In fact, on February 3, Aam Aadmi Party candidate Shelli Oberoi withdrew her petition from the Supreme Court for the post of mayor. In that petition, there was a demand for early elections. However, the petition was withdrawn from his side on the ground that elections are going to be held on 6 February. There was also a demand in the petition not to allow the nominated councilors to vote, but the Supreme Court refused to give any order on this.

Election results came on December 7

In the MCD meeting held on February 6, once again the election of the mayor could not be held. After this, the Aam Aadmi Party has again approached the Supreme Court. The results of the MCD elections came on December 7, in which the Aam Aadmi Party got 134 seats. BJP had won in 104 wards.

Since then, the House met for the election of the mayor three times, but due to the dispute between the two parties, the election could not be held. The Aam Aadmi Party is opposing the participation of nominated councilors in the voting. He says that under Article 243R of the Constitution and Section 3 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, nominated members do not have the right to vote.
