Cricketers whose career ended due to injury/health reasons, one was the captain of India.

New Delhi. It is more difficult to maintain this position for a long time than making a place in top level cricket. There are many cricketers who made a strong debut in international cricket and played strong innings in the initial matches but due to not being able to maintain consistency in their performance, they were out of the picture after some time. Among these cricketers, the names of India’s Vinod Kambli and Vijay Bhardwaj are prominent. Apart from these players, there were some players whose career came to an untimely end due to fatal injury or health reasons.

Some of these cricketers suffered such injuries during the match itself which proved fatal for their careers and their international careers ended. Among these players, the former captain of the Indian team, Nari Contractor, is prominent, who was hit on the head by the ball of West Indies fast bowler Charlie Griffith and could barely be saved. Apart from this, due to health reasons, the international career of some players has been put on ‘break’. Let us look at such cricketers whose careers ended due to injury or health reasons.

There was a hole in the heart, career came to a halt after the operation

James Taylor was once considered the future batsman of England. In ODIs, he scored runs at an average of 42.23, which included a century, but due to heart disease, his career ended at the age of 26. James played seven Tests and 27 ODIs for England and scored 312 runs at an average of 26.00 in Tests and 887 runs at an average of 40+ in ODIs, which included one century and seven half-centuries. Taylor had a hole in his heart which was discovered in 2016. After this he underwent an operation and somehow his life was saved. Taylor survived but his international cricket career came to an end. James, who was about five feet five inches tall, also faced criticism during his career due to his short height.

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen was his harsh critic. Pietersen had written in his autobiography ‘KP’, launched in 2014, ‘I do not think James was fit to play for the England team. James’s father was a jockey (horse rider) and due to his height, James was also eligible to become a jockey. We were facing the fastest bowling attack in the world and James was not prepared for it. Pietersen had made this controversial comment regarding Taylor’s performance in the 2012 England-South Africa series. Even though James Taylor could not perform well in this series, he proved KP wrong with his subsequent performance. After ending his international career due to health reasons, Taylor served the England and Wales Cricket Board as a selector.

Angioplasty after chest pain, international career ended

The story of Abid Ali of Pakistan is similar to that of England’s James Taylor. Despite his brilliant performance in domestic cricket, Abid got a chance to debut in international cricket only after 30 years. He made a great start by scoring a century in his very first Test and ODI, but due to reasons other than cricket, Abid’s journey came to a halt after only 16 Tests and 6 ODIs. In 16 Tests, he scored 1180 runs (average 49.16) with the help of four centuries and three half-centuries, while in ODIs he scored 234 runs (one century) at an average of 39.00.

Abid is the only batsman in the world who has scored a century in the debut match of two formats of cricket – Test and ODI. The career of this right-handed batsman suffered a setback when he came to know about a serious heart disease during a Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match in December 2021. Abid complained of chest pain after which he was taken to the hospital. Went there where he was diagnosed with Acute Coronary Syndrome. He underwent angioplasty. Although he has now returned to domestic cricket, the chances of this 36 year old batsman making a comeback in international cricket are almost gone.
