Former Pakistan captain Salim Malik was the first cricketer in the world to be found guilty of match-fixing and banned for life. Salim Malik was not only banned, but he/she also had to go to jail. Hansie Cronje’s revelations did not just hurt Indian cricket. South African cricketers also fell prey to this. Hansie Cronje was banned for life. Herschelle Gibbs and Henry Williams were also banned for six months each. Kenya’s Morris Odumbe and West Indies’ Marlon Samuels were also banned for 5 and 3 years respectively in separate cases.

There was a big storm of fixing in the year 2010, when in a sting operation, Pakistan’s Mohammad Aamir, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt were seen selling their game in exchange for money. However, this was more a case of spot fixing rather than match fixing. A case was filed against these Pakistani cricketers in England and they were also punished. Salman Butt was jailed for 30 months, Asif for 12 months and Aamir for 6 months.
