Congress was left alone on the issue of emergency! SP, TDP, TMC supported the ruling party on the proposal

New Delhi : The proceedings of the new Lok Sabha began in an interesting manner. The newly elected Speaker Om Birla read out a resolution condemning the Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi government to suppress protests. The special thing was that there was a split in the India Block on this resolution. During this, the Congress found itself isolated in the House. Apart from the BJP, India Block’s ally Samajwadi Party, DMK and Trinamool Congress also supported the condemnation motion. The condemnation motion was passed in the Lok Sabha amid uproar by opposition parties on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency.

What did Birla say on the proposal?

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, while presenting a censure motion against the imposition of emergency in the House, said that this House strongly condemns the decision to impose emergency in the country in 1975. Along with this, we appreciate the resolve of all those people who strongly opposed the emergency, fought an unprecedented struggle and took the responsibility of protecting the democracy of India. That day of 25 June 1975 will always be known as a black chapter in the history of India. On this day, the then Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi imposed emergency in the country and fiercely attacked the Constitution made by Baba Saheb Ambedkar.

On the opposition’s demand to save the constitution, BJP played the emergency card and gave a reply by bringing a censure motion in the House

Why did Congress find the proposal unexpected?

The resolution came as a surprise to the Congress after Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the Emergency on the opening day of the session. Not only did the Congress lose its allies like the SP and DMK but surprisingly, the Trinamool Congress also broke away from it. When Birla began reading out the resolution, which specifically named Indira Gandhi and the Congress for “attacks on Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution, illegal arrests, press censorship and other excesses”, only Congress MPs protested from the aisle.

SP, TMC MPs remained seated on their seats

At the same time, the rest of the opposition MPs, including Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress, remained seated on their seats. Congress allies also urged the Speaker to observe two minutes of silence to express solidarity with the victims of the Emergency and to “remind the younger generation” what happened during the 21 months of Emergency. Birla said that the time of Emergency was an ‘injustice period’, a ‘dark period’ in the history of our country. After imposing the Emergency, the Congress government of that time took many such decisions, which crushed the spirit of our Constitution.

BJP’s preparations

Apart from being an embarrassment for the Congress, the quick move is also significant because it once again signals the BJP’s commitment to respond to the Congress’ “constitution-in-danger” gambit – an issue that Rahul had used effectively during the Lok Sabha election – and also shows that the BJP is prepared to escalate differences within the India Bloc.
