Congress MP and lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi will present his/her views in the Supreme Court. Congress will also file an application soon. However, the case is already ongoing, so this application will be symbolic. It is not yet decided whether the case will be filed in the name of the party or a senior official like K.C. Venugopal will sign the application. This move will highlight the political stand of the party.

What happened in the CWC meeting?
At the CWC meeting on November 29, party officials had condemned the violation of the Places of Worship Act, accusing the BJP of applying to courts to maintain polarization. CWC had also passed a resolution attacking BJP and Modi government on this issue. Sources said that following the Supreme Court’s stay order, key Congress functionaries held a meeting with the top leadership, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. Various aspects of this issue were discussed in this meeting. The decision to join the case was also taken in this meeting.

During the recent Parliament session, there was also talk of the opposition INDIA alliance filing the case together, but now it seems the parties are moving forward separately. Samajwadi Party made police firing in Sambhal, UP a major issue of protest in Parliament. A survey of a mosque in Sambhal has been ordered. Congress believes that the BJP government is deliberately raising such issues to spread communal tension and divert people’s attention from the real issues.

Congress appeals to BJP
Congress says that the 1991 law was made to maintain the status quo of all religious places. The purpose of this law is to maintain communal harmony. Congress alleges that BJP is promoting religious polarization in the country by ignoring this law. Congress says that it will present its views strongly in the Supreme Court in this matter and will ensure strict implementation of the 1991 law. Congress has appealed to BJP to stop politicizing such sensitive issues and cooperate in maintaining peace and harmony in the country.
