The government has asked whether Wikipedia is just a medium or a publisher? Wikipedia describes itself as a free online encyclopedia. Anyone can create or edit an edit page on Wikipedia. But in India Wikipedia has been accused of wrong and defamatory content. Due to this Wikipedia is facing many legal cases.

The government has sent a notice to online encyclopedia Wikipedia amid its ongoing legal dispute with news agency ANI. The government has written letters to Wikipedia complaining about bias and misinformation on the website. According to sources, the government has also pointed towards the editorial control of some specific people on the website. Sources say the government has raised questions as to why Wikipedia should not be considered a publisher rather than an arbiter.

Delhi High Court had also raised questions

On September 5, the Delhi High Court had issued a contempt notice to Wikipedia for not disclosing information about those who made changes to ANI’s entry page. Angered by the news agency’s non-compliance with its order in the defamation suit, the court had told Wikipedia that if it did not want to work in India, it need not do so. The court will ask the central government to block this platform in the country.

Ongoing legal dispute with ANI

In August, the court had ordered Wikipedia to reveal the identities of those who made allegedly defamatory changes to the ANI page. The court had warned that it would shut down the website if its orders were not followed. In September, the Delhi High Court had termed the method of editing Wikipedia pages as dangerous. The court had said that anyone can edit a Wikipedia page. Unrestricted editing can lead to risks, especially when it comes to sensitive information about individuals or organizations.
