A day earlier on Sunday, Bangladesh had summoned Indian High Commissioner Prannoy Verma posted in Dhaka. The latest reason for dispute is India’s efforts to fence the border. Bangladesh alleges that India is trying to erect fencing at five places on the 4,156 km long India-Bangladesh border. he/she claims that this is a violation of the bilateral agreement. This agreement regulates activities on the border.

What happened to the Indian High Commissioner?

Verma reached the Foreign Ministry in Dhaka at around 3 pm. According to Bangladesh’s government news agency BSS, his/her meeting with Foreign Secretary Jashim Uddin lasted for about 45 minutes. An official said, ‘There is an agreement between Dhaka and New Delhi on fencing the border for security. Both our border security forces – BSF and BGB (Border Security Force and Border Guard Bangladesh) are in talks in this regard. We hope that this agreement will be implemented and a cooperative approach will be adopted to deal with border crimes.

Which path is Bangladesh moving on?

This tension is a challenge for the relations between the two countries. It remains to be seen how both the countries resolve this issue. Maintaining peace and security on the border is in the interest of both the countries. For this it is necessary to adopt the path of mutual dialogue and compromise. Will India and Bangladesh be able to reduce this tension and strengthen their relations? Only time will tell.
