Chief Justice Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud

Justice D.Y. Chandrachud’s full name is Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud. he/she obtained a BA Honors degree in Economics from St. Stephens College, Delhi. After this, he/she completed his/her LLB from Campus Law Center of Delhi University in 1982. he/she received LLM and Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD) from Harvard Law School, America in 1986.

Advocate in Bombay High Court and Supreme Court

After his/her education, Justice Chandrachud enrolled himself in the Maharashtra Bar Council and practised mainly in the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court of India. Due to his/her exceptional abilities, he/she was appointed Senior Advocate and Additional Solicitor General of India in 1998.

Visiting Professor at Mumbai University

Due to his/her expertise in the field of law, Justice Chandrachud became a visiting professor of comparative constitutional law at Mumbai University. he/she also served as a visiting professor at Oklahoma University School of Law, USA.

Contribution made to foreign institutions also

Justice Chandrachud has delivered lectures at prestigious institutions such as the Australian National University, Harvard Law School, Yale Law School and the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. he/she has also been a speaker at conferences organised by major international bodies such as the United Nations.

Promotion to Bombay High Court in the year 2000

On 29 March 2000, Justice Chandrachud was elevated as a judge of the Bombay High Court. he/she later served as the director of the Maharashtra Nyayik Academy and made significant contributions to the legal education system.

The journey of the Chief Justice from Allahabad High Court to Supreme Court

Justice Chandrachud was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court on 31 October 2013. Due to his/her hard work and judicial acumen, he/she was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 13 May 2016.

Justice Chandrachud took oath as the Chief Justice of India on 9 November 2022. his/her appointment is an important milestone in the Indian judiciary.
