Citizenship by birth will end in America, Trump announces, how will Indians be affected?

US Citizenship for Indians: America’s new President Donald Trump is talking about abolishing American citizenship by birth. In a recent interview with NBC, Trump confirmed that he/she will deport all undocumented immigrants living in the US. he/she mentioned during the interview his/her plan to end birth-again citizenship. If this happens, it will affect millions of Indians living in America.
Asked about deporting all illegal immigrants during his/her tenure, Trump said, “You have to do that.” he/she reiterated this commitment further in the interview, saying, “We are starting with the criminals and we have to do this.” he/she also acknowledged the practical challenges involved. Trump had strongly raised the issue of illegal immigrants during the presidential election. he/she even said that illegal people were being allowed to vote in the American elections.

Trump can abolish citizenship law on the first day of his/her tenure!

Trump also talked about ending American citizenship by birth. Describing this policy as ridiculous, Trump said, “We can do this through executive order.” he/she hinted that he/she might use executive orders on his/her first day, but also mentioned the possibility of a constitutional amendment. “We have to end this,” Trump said. he/she also hinted at talking to the Democratic Party about deporting immigrants and ending citizenship.

How will the abolition of citizenship affect Indians?

Pew Research, analyzing the US Census (2022), said that 48 lakh Indian-Americans live in America, out of which 34% or 16 lakh were born in America. These 16 lakh people are citizens of the country under the citizenship law because they were born in America. If Trump, under the executive order, abolishes the rule of citizenship by birth in America, it will have a direct impact on these 16 lakh people of Indian origin.

The biggest impact will be on those people whose parents do not have American citizenship and are not green card holders, because these people will not come under the rule of citizenship by birth. Already one has to wait for years for a green card. Currently, children who were not born in the US and whose families are caught in the green card backlog must leave the country on their own when they turn 21 or obtain another visa.

Citizenship by birth easily allows children from Indian families who are currently waiting for a green card to live in America. If they don’t get a green card, their children still remain US citizens. However, if Trump passes an executive order and abolishes citizenship by birth, then its direct impact will be visible on millions of Indians.
