China will think a hundred times before doing mischief, not two-four dozen but a total of 113 roads will reach LAC

New Delhi: The Vibrant Village Program (VVP), which is being run for the development of villages on the India-China border, has completed one year. Under this scheme, 113 road projects worth Rs 2,420.97 crore in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Uttarakhand have been approved in 2023-24. This information has been given in the annual report of the Union Home Ministry.

Third phase of road starts on China border

The third phase of the India-China Border Road (ICBR) project in Ladakh has also started. You might remember, in 2020 there was a clash between Indian and Chinese armies in Galwan. Recently, China has announced to build a 60 thousand MW dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo river near Arunachal Pradesh. Officials say that these road projects will improve connectivity in the border areas. Projects are also reviewed regularly.

Plan to brighten selected villages of 46 blocks

The central government had approved VVP in 2023. The scheme is for the development of selected villages in 46 blocks in 19 border districts of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. A total of Rs 4,800 crore has been allocated from 2022-23 to 2025-26. Out of this, Rs 2,500 crore is only for road construction.

According to official data, India constructed 470 km of roads per year in Ladakh from 2017-20. This is more than double the 230 kilometers per year in the decade to 2017. This includes building new roads and earthworks. 73 roads were considered strategically important in the first and second phase of India-China Border Roads (ICBR). Of these, the construction of 61 roads was entrusted to the Border Roads Organization (BRO).

Five new roads will be built in the third phase

An official said that five new roads have been identified in eastern Ladakh under the third phase. These will be constructed by BRO and Central Public Works Department.
