Chickenpox can happen more than once, at what age and when should one get vaccinated?


Chickenpox is an infectious disease caused by the varicella zoster virus. Apart from this, this problem also occurs when the infected substances present in the waste material are inhaled. Its common symptoms include itchy red rashes with fluid-filled blisters. Apart from this, some people may also have fever, loss of appetite and headache. This disease spreads very easily among those who have not had it before or who have not got vaccinated against it. Chicken pox used to be a global disease but today its vaccine helps people avoid it. Chickenpox is also called varicella i.e. chicken pox.

What is Chickenpox (Varicella)?


Varicella zoster is a virus that causes chickenpox. Once chickenpox occurs, the virus remains in the body. Although it does not remain active, it can become active again in the form of ringworm. In such a situation, there is a possibility of its emergence. To reduce the risk of shingles, doctors recommend getting shingles vaccine after the age of 50.

Symptoms of Chickenpox

The rash caused by chickenpox appears within 10 to 20 days of exposure to a virus called varicella zoster. This rash lasts for 5 to 10 days. Apart from rashes, some other symptoms are also seen like-

  • Fever
  • loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • stomach pain

There are total 3 stages of chickenpox
Stage 1: This stage consists of red raised bumps that last for a few days.
Stage 2: The second stage consists of fluid-filled blisters that burst within a day or two.
Stage 3: In this stage a scab forms over the blister. These also last only for some time.

Chickenpox vaccine should be administered as per the doctor’s advice. The first vaccine is given to children and infants between 12 and 15 months. Whereas the second vaccine is given between 4 to 6 years. Children above 6 years of age who have not been vaccinated should receive two vaccines at an interval of 3 months. People 13 years of age or older receive two chickenpox vaccinations, one to two months apart.

Varicella vaccine also has some side effects like-

  • Fever
  • joint pain or stiffness
  • headache loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • Vomit
  • pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site
