Champions Trophy: It is too early to make Shubman Gill the vice-captain… Who raised questions on the selectors’ decision?

Champions Trophy 2025: Former Team India spinner Harbhajan Singh has raised questions on making Shubman Gill the vice-captain of Team India.

New Delhi. The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is starting from 19 February. This will be the first time that Pakistan will host this tournament. However, India’s matches will be played in Dubai. Earlier, India’s team for the series against England and ICC Champions Trophy has been announced. Rohit Sharma has been made the captain of the team of this tournament. Shubhman Gill has been made vice-captain. If some reports are to be believed, head coach Gautam Gambhir wanted Hardik Pandya to be made the vice-captain of the Indian team. But Gill was the choice of Ajit Agarkar and Rohit Sharma.

People are giving different opinions on social media on the appointment of Shubman Gill as vice-captain. Some are calling this decision right while some are saying that Hardik Pandya should have been the vice-captain. Now former Team India spinner Harbhajan Singh has given his/her opinion on Gill being made the vice-captain. he/she said that there was no need to do this right now.

Harbhajan Singh said in his/her YouTube channel that, ‘India could have gone with Rohit-Yashasvi as openers because the team needs to field such players who are in form. Also, right-left combination in the top order also comes from this. This causes problems to the opposing bowlers.

Bhajji further said that Shubman Gill is the vice-captain and he/she will open the innings. You cannot say that Yashasvi Jaiswal will open. Shubman Gill will play at number 3 and Virat Kohli at number 4. If this happens, where will Shreyas Iyer play? There is a catch here, but Yashasvi should have played. When a player is in form, he/she should play.

Harbhajan said that the decision of the selectors is an indication that Gill can become the captain of the ODI team in the near future. It seems that they have chosen him/her as vice-captain keeping the future in mind. It is possible that whenever there is a change in the next six-eight months, Gill will be given this responsibility. However, to give this responsibility to Gill, he/she could have waited till the Champions Trophy and then he/she should have been made the vice-captain.
