Central government will not release Good Governance Index 2023, know when the next Good Governance Index will come


New Delhi: The central government has decided not to release the Good Governance Index 2023. This index is a biennial ranking of states and union territories (UTs). It was to be released during the Good Governance Week (December 19 to 25). Now the next edition of the Good Governance Index will be published in 2025. This has been claimed in the report of ‘The Indian Express’. This index was launched on December 25, 2019, on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This day is celebrated as ‘Good Governance Day’.

Centre’s big decision on good governance index

The Good Governance Index comprises more than 50 indicators including agriculture, economic governance, public health and citizen-centric governance. Tamil Nadu and Gujarat were ranked first among large states in the rankings for 2019 and 2021 respectively. As of December 7, the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions was planning to release the 2023 index.

Will have to wait for GGI 2023

DARPG had issued a press release announcing ‘Prashasan Gaon Ki Aur’, a national campaign for redressal of public grievances from 19 to 24 December. It was said that ‘Assessment Report on Special Campaign 4.0, Good Governance Index 2023 and Annual Report of CPGRAMS will be released.’ Earlier, in the ministry’s annual report for 2023-2024 released in November, the department had said, ‘The first Good Governance Index was released in 2019, the second Good Governance Index was released in 2021. The third Good Governance Index 2023 has been prepared and will be released soon.

That’s why the index was not released

Sources said the Good Governance Index 2023 was planned to be released on December 23, but the government decided not to release it. According to sources, the data collected from the states was for 2023 and releasing it in late 2024 means the data will be out of date. The GGI process will be repeated and new data collected.

What did the Secretary of DARPG say in the whole matter

DARPG Secretary V. Srinivas informed that ‘GGI is a biennial publication of assessment of states/UTs, and the next edition will be published in December 2025. GGI 2021 and 2019 have been released by DARPG. DARPG has published District Good Governance Index for Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh for the period 2021-2024. 58 indicators from 10 sectors were included in the 2021 index released by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on December 25, 2021. While Gujarat topped the overall ranking, 20 states showed improvement in overall scores from 2019.

What is Good Governance Index?

This index was created to promote transparency and accountability in government functioning. In this, the progress of states in different areas is measured. This index promotes healthy competition among states. This motivates them to improve their administration. However, many questions are being raised due to the non-release of the index. Currently waiting for the next version to see if there will be something new and better in it.
