New Delhi: India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The Ministry of External Affairs said that India has always called for reducing tensions, exercising restraint and returning to the path of dialogue and diplomacy.Foreign Ministry welcomed
A statement issued by the Foreign Ministry said that we welcome the ceasefire declared between Israel and Lebanon. We have always called for de-escalation, restraint and a return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy. We hope that these developments will bring peace and stability to the entire region.

The ceasefire comes after months of deadly fighting between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah. This fight started with the Israel-Gaza conflict, but it took a more aggressive form in September this year. Many leaders of the Lebanese terrorist group were killed in this attack. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has thanked outgoing US President Joe Biden for his/her involvement in achieving the ceasefire agreement. According to Netanyahu’s office, he/she informed Biden about this ceasefire in a call. Apart from this, Netanyahu also appreciated the understanding of the American leader in which he/she said that Israel will maintain its freedom of action in implementing it.

Before Israel approved the deal, Netanyahu said that the duration of the ceasefire depended on events in Lebanon and that the ceasefire would allow Israel to increase pressure on Hamas and focus on the Iranian threat.

What is the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire agreement?
The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah will last for 60 days. After this, Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants will retreat from southern Lebanon.

The agreement, announced on Tuesday night, was mediated by the US and France after nearly 14 months of fighting. While US President Joe Biden said that the agreement is designed to end the conflict permanently. Israeli ministers stressed that Israel would resume attacks on Lebanon if Hezbollah violated the terms of the ceasefire.

Although the agreement does not affect Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza, the ceasefire will end nearly 14 months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. Israeli shelling has killed more than 3,760 people in Lebanon over the past 13 months, many of them civilians, according to Lebanese health officials.
