India ranked among top 5 countries in the world and best among G-20 countries
India has been ranked among the top 5 countries in the world and the best among G-20 countries on the basis of its climate change performance, said a statement from the Ministry of Power. According to the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI, 2023), India has jumped two places and is now at the 8th position. The climate protection performance of these 59 countries, which account for 92 per cent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, is assessed in four categories – GHG emissions (40 per cent of the overall score), renewable energy (20 per cent). , energy use (20 percent) and climate policy (20 percent).
India gets high ratings in GHG emissions and energy use categories
India earned high ratings in the GHG emissions and energy use categories, while medium ratings for climate policy and renewable energy, the statement said. India’s aggressive policies towards rapid use of renewable energy and a strong framework for energy efficiency programs have shown considerable impact. According to the CCPI report, India is on track to meet its 2030 emissions target. The ranking given by CCPI places India as the only G-20 country in the top 10 ranks. It added that India will now assume the presidency of the G-20 and it would be an opportune time to show the world its climate mitigation policies such as deployment of renewable sources of energy and other energy transition programmes.
