Carcinoid tumor is a type of cancer. It is found in the lungs. This type of cancer is quite rare. This tumor starts in the neuroendocrine cells of the lungs. Although this cancer grows slowly and the risk of it spreading to other parts of the body is very less.

Your neuroendocrine cells do things like move food through the digestive tract and air through the lungs. Carcinoid tumors can start in any part of your body, whether it’s the digestive tract, kidneys, or any other part of the body.

Types of Carcinoid Tumors

Typical Carcinoid Tumor: This tumor is more common and 90 percent of carcinoid tumor cases are of this type. This cancer spreads very slowly and does not spread to any other part of your body. This may happen in the large airways of your lungs. It is also called peripheral carcinoid.
Atypical Carcinoid: This type is rarely seen and grows very rapidly. This cancer can spread to other parts also. Apart from this, it is seen more in people who smoke more. It is more commonly seen in smaller airways but sometimes occurs in larger airways as well.

Your neck and face may become red and your weight may increase suddenly.

When neuroendocrine cells make more copies than they can handle, a tumor can form. By observing their properties under microscope they are known as carcinoids. The reason why these cells start growing so uncontrollably and turn into tumors is not known.

If you smoke a lot then you have a higher risk of this cancer.
Your risk of this cancer also increases if you have a disorder like multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1, which is an inherited and rare disorder.
Women have a higher risk of this cancer than men. As your age increases, the risk of cancer also increases. Its risk starts increasing after the age of 45 to 55.

Surgery : Your doctor may also perform surgery to remove this tumor. This method of treatment is used when it has not spread to other parts of your body.

Removing lymph nodes: If this cancer has reached any of your lymph nodes, then the doctor removes it so that it does not reach any other part of the body.

Radiation Therapy: Your doctor may give radiation therapy using a radiation beam, and it is considered to be the most effective in treating any type of cancer.
