Cannot let talent go to waste… All the best, Supreme Court directs Dalit students for admission in IIT.


New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Monday, using its extraordinary power, directed IIT Dhanbad to grant admission to a Dalit student. This student had lost his/her seat due to missing the deadline for depositing fees. Rs 17,500… This was the fee that a Dalit student had to pay to secure his/her admission in IIT Dhanbad. The student from Uttar Pradesh had four days to deposit the fees. The student’s father, a daily wage laborer, tried his/her best but missed the deadline to deposit the fees. The student’s dream of going to IIT was put on hold. After this the student’s father took the fight to the court. For three months, the father made rounds of the SC/ST Commission, Jharkhand and Madras High Courts. Finally, when nothing worked, he/she approached the Supreme Court. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud ordered IIT to admit the student.

We can’t let such a young talented boy go. he/she cannot be left in the lurch. he/she went to Jharkhand Legal Services Authority. Then he/she went to Chennai Legal Services Authority and then he/she was sent to the High Court. he/she is a Dalit boy who has to wander from door to door.

Cannot deprive talented students

The bench said in its order, “We are of the view that talented students like the petitioner, who come from a disadvantaged group and who did everything to get admission, should not be deprived… We direct that the candidate should be admitted to IIT Dhanbad.” he/she should be given admission and he/she should be allowed to remain in the same batch in which he/she would have been given admission had he/she paid the fees.

Court used Article 142

The top court, using its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution, directed IIT Dhanbad to admit Atul Kumar to its Electrical Engineering B.Tech course. Article 142 of the Constitution empowers the apex court to pass any order in the interest of justice.

Chief Justice Chandrachud told the 18-year-old student from a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district, “All the best. Do well.” Feeling relieved, Atul said that the derailed train is now back on track. A seat has been provided to me. It has been done. I am very happy that my seat cannot be taken away only because of financial problem. he/she is hopeful of getting help from the apex court.
