Canada Study Permit Rules: To reduce the number of foreign students in Canada, the government has started imposing limits on study permits. For the next two years, only a certain number of study permits will be issued to students from all over the world, including Indians. Because of this, students thinking of studying in Canada are quite disappointed. However, it is not that one cannot study in Canada without a study permit. There are many other ways to study here that do not require a study permit.
‘Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada’ (IRCC) issues study permits to foreign students. But IRCC rules also include some exceptions, through which one can study in top universities of Canada without a study permit. In total, there are eight such categories in which if a student comes, he/she will get admission without study permit. Let us know who are allowed to study in Canada without a study permit.

Who can study in Canada without a study permit?

Short-Term Students: In Canada, studies are conducted from graduation to post graduation. However, international students seeking admission to Canada to study post-secondary programs of six months or less duration do not require a study permit.

Family or staff of the foreign representative: Family members or staff of a person accredited by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) as a foreign representative in Canada do not need a study visa to study in Canada. Here foreign representative means ambassador or diplomat. However, your embassy should clarify through the GSC whether you will need a study permit or not.

Members of the armed forces of a country designated under the Visiting Forces Act: Some members of foreign armed forces who are on official duty in Canada do not need a study permit to study here. These rules are for those who are members of the armed forces of any country and come under Canada’s Visiting Forces Act (VFA). However, family members of members of the foreign armed forces will need a study permit to study in Canada.

Registered Indians in Canada: People with registered Indian status in Canada do not need a permit to study in the country, even if they are citizens of another country. Registered Indian status does not mean citizens of India. This status has been given to the indigenous people in Canada.

Minor children present in Canada: Minor children of refugees or asylum seekers and minor children of asylum seekers or refugees do not need a study permit. Similarly, children of Canadian citizens and permanent residents also do not require a study visa. If a student’s parents have permission to study or work in Canada, their child can also attend pre-school, primary school or secondary school in the country without a study permit.

Foreign Workers: Foreign workers are also allowed to study in Canada without a study permit. But they must have a valid work permit, which must have been issued before June 7, 2023.
