Canada Work Rule: New rules for job after studies in Canada come into force, now these will be the new conditions of PGWP

Canada PGWP Updated Rules: New ‘Post-Graduation Work Permit’ (PGWP) rules have now come into effect for students going to study in Canada. The new rules have come into effect from November 1, under which some changes are going to be seen in the PGWP program. After studying in Canada, foreign students get a work permit, known as PGWP. The conditions regarding PGWP have been changed in the changes made through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Now before releasing PGWP, maximum emphasis will be given on language. It will also be seen which subjects the students have studied. These changes have been made so that Canada’s post-study work visa system is in line with the needs of the labor market there. However, some of the old eligibility criteria for obtaining PGWP remain the same. In such a situation, let us know in detail what changes have been made regarding PGWP and which things are going to remain the same as before.

What has changed regarding language?

When applying for PGWP, applicants will be required to provide evidence of their command of the language. Canada wants foreign students to have the communication skills needed for jobs. Certificates proving language proficiency should not be more than two years old. English language proficiency can be proven through CELPIP, IELTS or PTE scores. For French, IRCC TEF Canada, TCF Canada, and NCLC scores are required.

What are the conditions associated with the course?

Earlier, PGWP was available after studying most of the courses. But now, in view of the shortage of workers, it will be easier for students studying in certain fields to get PGWP. It will be easy to get PGWP for students studying fields like Agriculture and Agri Foods, Healthcare, Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths, Trade and Transport. The Canadian government has done this so that the ongoing shortage of workers in these sectors can be overcome.

What has changed in the application process and processing conditions?

The process of submitting applications has also been changed by IRCC. Under the new rules, PGWP applications must be submitted online, whether the applicant is applying from within Canada or from abroad. The applicant can no longer submit his/her/her application at the Port of Entry. Students who want to work in sectors where medical examination is required will have the option to opt for upfront medical examination 90 days before submitting the PGWP application.

What are the guidelines regarding student status?

If a student’s study permit expires before he/she or she can apply for PGWP, IRCC will give him/her or her 90 days to maintain student status. During this time, applicants must submit both the PGWP application and fees to have their student status reinstated. However, students cannot work until they have received both their study and work permits.

What has not changed regarding PGWP?

Even though many things have changed regarding PGWP, some important terms have remained unchanged. General eligibility and physical location criteria still exist. Students must study at a designated learning institution to achieve the PGWP. These rules apply to all students. In such a situation, if you are also going to study in Canada, then you should know about all these rules very well.
