Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told in the weekly press briefing that the Canadian government is monitoring Indian diplomats through audio-video. The Government of Canada had informed some Indian Consulate officials that they were being subjected to audio and video surveillance, which would continue. The spokesperson said that the conversations of our diplomats were also interfered with. We have officially protested to the Government of Canada, as we consider these actions to be a violation of diplomatic and consular agreements.

Foreign Ministry raised questions

A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the Canadian government cannot justify the fact that they (our diplomats) have engaged in harassment and intimidation on technicalities. Our diplomatic and consular personnel are already working in an environment of extremism and violence. This action by the Government of Canada escalates the situation and is not in line with established diplomatic norms and practices.

Canadian Police Commissioner Mike Duheme had claimed in a press conference on October 14 that Indian diplomats and officials in Canada had misused their positions to secretly collect information for the Indian government. For this, Indian officials used agents. Some of these agents were threatened and pressurized into working with the Indian government.

The information collected by India is used to target South Asian people. Then police officials in Canada alleged on October 16 that separatists and people of South Asian origin were targeted by the gangster Lawrence Group. Brigitte Gauvin, assistant commissioner at the RCMP, a Canadian police department, said the Indian government has used the Lawrence Group.
