Who will be the new CAG?
According to the report, Murmu cannot be given a new term. After the CAG, the government has to decide whether it wants to give another term to Shaktikanta Das in December or look for someone else for the crucial job at Mumbai’s Mint Road.
Das’s job better as RBI Governor
Former bureaucrat Das was given a three-year tenure following the sudden resignation of Urjit Patel in December 2018. There was a heated argument with Pateli’s government. Das was given a second term three years ago. he/she is widely seen to have managed the financial sector well. he/she also has had good relations with the Centre, something his/her two predecessors could not manage.
Decision on Chief Economic Advisor also
A month after the appointment of the RBI Governor, the question before the government will be whether to continue with Chief Economic Advisor V Ananth Nageswaran. Given that the budget process will begin in the next few weeks, the government may already decide whether its top economist is likely to get a new term or not. Dilemma regarding SEBI Chief
The fourth major appointment is regarding SEBI Chief. This is going to create the biggest dilemma for the Modi government. The reason for this is that there is a controversy regarding Madhabi Puri Butch. Madhabi Puri Butch has been accused of irregularities and conflict of interest. However, he/she has denied these allegations, while there is a discussion going on in the government on which civil servant is best suited to take charge of a regulator like SEBI.
On March 1, 2022, the former banker was named SEBI chief for three years. he/she is eligible for a new term. At least three of his/her predecessors, G N Bajpai, M Damodaran and C B Bhave, have served for three-year terms.
