BTS member Suga had to pay a fine of lakhs of rupees for driving an e-scooter while drunk.


The last few months have been full of challenges for Suga, a member of South Korea’s famous music band BTS. he/she had to face severe criticism after the drink and drive incident in August. Now the pop star has got some relief after getting punishment from the court. Suga has been fined 15 million won (approximately Rs 9,30,000) for driving an electric scooter (e-scooter) under the influence. According to Korea Times, the Seoul Court has issued a summary order. Singer Suga was fined 15 million won KRW (approximately $11,200 USD). In South Korea, summary orders are usually issued for less serious cases. If Suga wants to contest the order, he/she has seven days to request a formal hearing.

What is the whole matter?

This incident happened on 6 August 2024. When Suga fell while driving an electric scooter alone under the influence of alcohol. Seoul Yongsan Police Station said that they have registered a case against Suga for violating the Road Traffic Act (Drunk Driving).

The officers who helped Suga after he/she fell smelled alcohol and took him/her to the police station. A breathalyzer test revealed that his/her blood alcohol content was 0.227 percent, which is much higher than the 0.08 percent limit set for revoking a license in Korea.

Suga had apologized

Suga publicly apologized after the incident. his/her statement said, ‘I am deeply saddened and sorry to give you disappointing news. After drinking wine at dinner last night, I went home on an electric scooter. ‘I breached the Road Traffic Act because I thought home was not far away and I did not understand that using an electric scooter while drunk is prohibited.’

Suga took responsibility

he/she further informed that his/her license was canceled for driving under the influence of alcohol. he/she further said, ‘I fell while parking the scooter in front of my house and a nearby police officer conducted a breathalyzer test, after which my license was canceled and a fine was imposed. However, no one suffered any loss during this period. But without any excuse, it is completely my responsibility and I sincerely apologize to everyone.
