New Delhi: In many states of the country, severe heat and heat wave have been wreaking havoc for the past several days. The rising temperature has created a problem for breathing. In Bihar, intense heat and severe heat wave have become a disaster. Here, 14 people including 10 polling personnel died due to severe heat. At the same time, 12 people died of heat stroke in Sundargarh, Odisha, while four people died in Jharkhand. Meanwhile, 9 home guard jawans and five polling personnel who went on election duty died due to heat wave in Purvanchal.

Four people died due to scorching heat and heatwave in Jharkhand on Friday, while 1,326 people were admitted to hospital after falling ill. Officials said all district hospitals and other medical establishments have been asked to make arrangements for air-conditioned rooms and beds for heatwave victims. Temperatures remained above 40 degree Celsius in most of the 24 districts of Jharkhand, with places like Daltonganj and Garhwa recording temperatures above 47 degree Celsius. Deaths of animals, especially bats, are also reported due to the scorching heat.

A statement issued by the Disaster Management Department said that most of the deaths occurred in Bhojpur, where five officials deployed on election duty died due to heat stroke. The state is in the grip of severe heat as the mercury has crossed 44 degrees Celsius in many places. Due to the scorching heat, all schools, coaching institutes and Anganwadi centers have been closed till June 8.

Teachers should be given leave in this scorching heat.’ Meanwhile, Congress’ Rajasthan unit president Govind Singh Dotasara on Friday targeted the state’s BJP government over the deaths due to scorching heat and alleged that it was hiding the data.

The scorching heat continues to wreak havoc in Odisha. In the state’s Sundargarh, 12 people died of heat stroke during the last 24 hours. According to official sources, four people died due to heat stroke. Sundargarh ADM Ashutosh Kulkarni said, ‘At present, ten people are being treated at Hi-Tech Hospital and 23 others at RGH Hospital. Their condition is said to be stable. Additional rooms have been kept ready in case the number of patients increases.’ According to Meteorological Department sources, Rourkela recorded a temperature of 44.9 degrees Celsius on Thursday, while the mercury reached 43.6 degrees in Sundargarh.
