Brazil declared Indonesia as new member of BRICS




Brazil has announced that Indonesia has become a full member of the BRICS group. Brazil, which will chair BRICS in 2025, said Indonesia’s candidacy was supported by the bloc’s leaders at the Johannesburg summit in 2023.

In a statement, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry welcomed Indonesia’s entry into BRICS. It said Indonesia and other BRICS members support reform of global governance institutions.

“The Brazilian Government welcomes Indonesia’s accession to BRICS. As the largest economy and most populous country in Southeast Asia, Indonesia shares with other BRICS members support for the reform of global governance institutions and makes important contributions to deepening Global South cooperation, priorities that Brazil “Enhancing Global South cooperation for more inclusive and sustainable governance,” Brazil’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Indonesia formally informed the group about its interest in joining BRICS only after the installation of its new government. According to the statement, the BRICS countries unanimously approved Indonesia’s membership in 2024 in line with the guiding principles, criteria and procedures for enlargement that were agreed upon in Johannesburg.

BRIC, as a formal grouping, began in 2006 after the leaders of Russia, India and China met in St. Petersburg on the sidelines of the G8 Outreach Summit. The group was formalized during the first meeting of BRIC Foreign Ministers on the sidelines of the UNGA. In 2006 in New York.

The first BRIC summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia in 2009. At the 2010 BRIC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New York, it was agreed to expand BRIC into BRICS with the inclusion of South Africa.

South Africa participated in the 3rd BRICS summit in Sanya in 2011. A further expansion of BRICS takes place in 2024 with five new members – Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The 16th BRICS summit was being held in Kazan in 2024 under the chairmanship of Russia.
