Biometric system will stop bogus voting, experts advised

New Delhi : After postal ballot, complaints of fake voting keep coming up during elections conducted with EVM. To eliminate such problems during elections, experts have suggested voting through biometric system. This will prevent fake voting in someone else’s name, prevent voting in the name of a dead person and if any strongman tries to capture booths and get votes in his/her favour, then that too can be stopped. Voting through biometric system can have such benefits. Along with this, voters will be able to get rid of long queues to a great extent. Biometric system will take very less time to identify the voter.

Former Election Commissioner OP Rawat told the benefits

In this case, former Chief Election Commissioner O.P. Rawat said that voting through biometric system will have many benefits. This will not only curb bogus voting but will also provide another big benefit in the form of votes being cast by migrant voters who migrate from their homes in large numbers for labour work, jobs or any other work. Biometric system will also make it possible for such voters to cast their votes and that too in a completely identity based manner. Just, polling stations will have to be made for them in those areas where the labourers have shifted.

Rawat said that the work of upgrading the voter list with biometric system had also started. In 2015, the work of linking voter card with voluntary Aadhaar was started. In just four months, Aadhaar cards of 30 crore voters were linked to voter cards. Later the matter went to court. In 2020, a proposal regarding this was also sent to the government. More work is yet to be done on this.

How will the system work?

Experts say that even if the voting system is connected to biometrics, EVM cannot be linked to any biometric or any other external gadget. To conduct voting through biometric system, a device will be placed at every polling booth. Voter’s identity can be confirmed by placing finger or thumb on it. Then as soon as the voter’s identity is confirmed, his/her vote will be cast. If there is any technical problem in identifying a voter in the system, then that voter can be identified like the existing system. Work is going on from the commission’s side, but it has not been finalized.
