The Indian smartphone market has always been highly competitive and not all mobile brands have been able to keep up with the momentum. Coming to 2014-2015, the smartphone market in India was replete with options from all price ranges of brands, both big and small. But some brands soon ceased to exist after being active for some time. Here are 15 popular smartphone brands that have given up and can be considered ‘dead’ in India. LG Electronics
In April 2021, LG Electronics announced that it was closing its mobile business unit. Despite launching innovative handsets globally, LG has not been able to make a mark in the smartphone market. The company said that it will provide service support and software updates to users of existing mobile phones for some time.

Sony
In May 2019, Sony announced its exit from the Indian smartphone market after declining sales. Sony has pulled out of some markets other than India as well. The company had also stopped selling in Central and South America, West Asia, South Asia, Oceania etc in FY18.

HTC
Taiwanese brand HTC tried to make another comeback in the Indian smartphone market in 2019, but to no avail. HTC faced a major setup in India from Chinese mobile makers and eventually decided to stop selling the phone directly in India.

BlackBerry Mobile
Blackberry made a mark with its QWERTY smartphone among office-goers in India and globally, but with the growing popularity of Android and iOS, the company could not compete. Blackberry Mobile finally closed after August 2020 with the termination of its contract with manufacturing partner TCL.

LeEco
LeEco has made a grand entry into the Indian smartphone market. But it was burning a lot more cash than it was actually making. It finally had to be closed in 2017.

Meizu
Meizu is another Chinese smartphone brand that tried to compete with Xiaomi by offering more hardware specs at affordable prices. While some of its handsets quickly gained popularity, the brand could not manage its business well in India and had to be shut down.

Spice
Spice Mobiles was a popular India smartphone brand that operated in the budget segment. But the company had to be closed due to stiff competition from other players.

Qiku
Qiku was another smartphone brand that launched around 2014 and attracted consumers by offering more hardware specs for a lower price. The company launched a few handsets but it could not leave its mark in the market.

Panasonic
After struggling for some time in the affordable smartphone market, Panasonic finally gave up.

Videocon
Videocon launched several mobile phones in the affordable segment, but the brand did not find any competitive advantage in the market and eventually had to stop selling the phones.

yu
Micromax’s sub-brand YU entered the Indian market to challenge Xiaomi. But it could not manage to survive the stiff competition.

iBall
Accessories maker iBall also attempted to make budget smartphones to target rural areas but intense competition from other Chinese brands like Oppo, Xiaomi, Vivo made it difficult to survive.

InFocus
InFocus is an American smartphone brand, which suddenly stopped selling phones in India after launching a few handsets.

Alcatel
Alcatel could never make a mark in the Indian smartphone market and soon the brand lost its identity among buyers in India.

iVoomi
iVoomi is another smartphone brand that was operating in the budget smartphone space, but could not compete with other brands.
