Big update in the tender regarding 307 howitzer guns of Indian Army, this company made the lowest bid.


New Delhi: Pune-based company Bharat Forge Limited has been declared the lowest bidder to procure 307 DRDO-developed ATAGS howitzers for the Indian Army. This deal is worth more than Rs 6,000 crore. Under this deal, Bharat Forge will manufacture 60 per cent of the 307 guns itself. Tata Advanced Systems Limited, the second lowest bidder, will manufacture the remaining 40 percent of the guns.

Defense sources said that the commercial bids of both the companies were opened recently, in which Bharat Forge has emerged as the lowest bidder and will get a major share of the order. This order will be a major success for the indigenous weapon system developed by Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). Before opening this bidding, the Indian Army had tested Tata vehicles which can be used to transport howitzers in border areas.

Know what is the plan

This will also be the first sale of the guns in the country as the howitzers have already been exported to fellow foreign countries like Armenia. Equipment manufacturers are now also considering exporting to other friendly countries while focusing on the African market. The order for 307 Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) is expected to be placed in the current financial year for deployment along the borders with China and Pakistan. The indigenous 155 mm, 52 caliber howitzer was developed in mission mode by DRDO in collaboration with two private partners Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Bharat Forge Limited.

Howitzer was tested in 2023

The Defense Ministry had received a proposal from the Indian Army to purchase 307 ATAGS howitzers for deployment on the borders with China and Pakistan. The testing of ATAGS was completed at Pokhran Field Firing Range (PFFR) between April 26 and May 2, 2023. ATAGS is an indigenous towed artillery gun system project which was initiated by DRDO in mission mode as a part of the Artillery Modernization Program of the Indian Army.
