Big news! The design of PG courses has changed, now you can get a master’s degree in any subject

Changes in PG Syllabus by UGC: After graduation, PG studies are also changing. According to the latest curriculum framework released by UGC, many big changes are being made in PG courses in the country. All these are under the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP). The good news is that if you want, you can do PG in any subject. So if you are thinking of doing PG, then first know what new avenues are open for you?

Post Graduation: New design of PG course

First let’s talk about the new design of PG program. Now colleges will have the freedom to start different types of PG programs. You must be thinking how? So listen, if you have done a three year graduation course then you can choose a two year PG program, in which you can focus completely on research in the second year.

But if you have done a four-year honours or honours program with research, then you will also have a one-year PG program. The meaning is clear, time saving! And what’s more, now there will also be a five-year integrated bachelor and master program. Meaning two degrees together.

New Curriculum for Post Graduate Courses

Now let’s talk about the new PG curriculum. You will get a lot of flexibility in this, which is as follows-

  • If you wish, you can switch from one subject to another. Students who take major and minor subjects in graduation can choose any one in PG.
  • In the new curriculum, you will have the freedom to choose the course of your choice. If you crack the entrance, you can choose any subject other than your graduation subject.
  • There will also be an option to study offline, online, or both ways.
  • According to UGC rules, you will also be able to study in different universities.

Credit System in PG Courses: Credit System in PG

Now let us know about the eligibility and credits required for PG program-

  • If you have done graduation in Honours with Research or Honours with 160 credits, then you can take admission in PG program of one year i.e. two semesters. It will be at level 6.5 of NHEQF.
  • If you have completed a three-year graduation with 120 credits, you can take admission in a two-year or four semester PG program. This will also be at NHEQF level 6.5.
  • If you have completed a four-year graduation like BE, B.Tech. with 160 credits, you can take admission in a two-year PG program like ME, M. Tech. It will be at Level 7 of NHEQF.

Master Degree: Master degree will be taught at 3 levels

Now let us come to the National Higher Education Qualification Framework i.e. NHEQF. Under this, the qualifications required for a degree, diploma, or certificate will be decided. Levels 6, 6.5, and 7 have been decided for PG programs. The PG framework will be linked with the National Credit Framework (NCF). This means that there will be a complete account of your studies, assignments, credits submitted, transfer and their use.

Now you will ask what will be the studies? So let us tell you that universities will now start PG programs in important subjects like machine learning as well as multidisciplinary fields like ‘AI + X’ and professional fields like health care, agriculture, and law.
