Ashwini Vaishnav called the decision historic
Giving information about the Cabinet decisions, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said, ‘The government has decided to give the status of classical languages ​​to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali.’ he/she said that these languages ​​were selected on the basis of the report of the committee of linguistic experts. he/she said, ‘There is literature of 1500 to 2000 years in these languages, there is continuity, there are old inscriptions and there is also oral tradition. The decision was taken keeping all this in mind.

‘This is a historic decision and is in line with the philosophy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA government to carry forward our culture, be proud of our heritage and be proud of all Indian languages ​​and our rich heritage.’ The government said that classical languages ​​serve as custodians of India’s ancient cultural heritage, and represent the historical and cultural essence of each community.

What is classical language?
On 12 October 2004, the Government of India decided to create a new category of languages ​​as ‘Classical Languages’, under which Tamil was declared a classical language, followed by Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Oriya. given. A government statement said that in 2013, a proposal was received from the Government of Maharashtra requesting to grant classical language status to Marathi. This proposal was sent to the Linguistics Expert Committee (LEC). LEC recommended Marathi for the classical language.

Big decision before Maharashtra elections
Assembly elections are due in Maharashtra later this year and this was a major election issue in the state. The Maharashtra government had proposed for Marathi in 2013. After this, proposals for Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali came from Bihar, Assam and West Bengal. The Central Government had created a new category of Classical Language on 12 October 2004 and Tamil was then given the status of Classical Language. Sanskrit got this status in 2005. Apart from these, till now Malayalam, Odia, Telugu and Kannada have also been given this status.
