Big action by UGC on manipulation in PhD! Admission closed in 3 universities, investigation of 30 ongoing

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken major action against three universities for allegedly manipulating PhD programmes. All three universities of Rajasthan have been barred from taking admission in PhD courses for the next five years. These universities will not be able to do any registration in PhD in the session from 2025-26 to 2029-30. UGC Chairman Prof. M. Jagadish Kumar says that it is the responsibility of universities to maintain the highest standards in any program including PhD. Action will continue against universities that do not follow PhD rules.

PhD: Data of 30 universities is being investigated

Currently UGC is examining the data of 30 more universities. It is possible that such action may be taken against some other universities in the future. UGC Chairman Prof. M. Jagadish Kumar says that the quality of PhD programs in some other universities is being checked. If they are found violating PhD rules, action will also be taken against them. Pro. Kumar said that it is very important to identify the institutions that do not follow the rules and stop them from PhD admission.

Action was taken against which 3 universities?

The three universities of Rajasthan which have been stopped from doing PhD admissions are-

  • OPJS University, Churu
  • Sunrise University, Alwar
  • Singhania University, Jhunjhunu

UGC has specifically appealed to the students and parents not to enroll for PhD in these three universities. Because there will be a ban on PhD admission in these universities from the coming session till the session of 2029. Even after this, if a student takes admission, then his/her degree will not be considered valid.

what were the reasons

UGC Chairman Prof. M. Jagadish Kumar says that as per UGC regulations, several parameters are considered for running a PhD programme-

  • How are admissions done?
  • What is the weightage of entrance test?
  • The weightage of interview is not much
  • How is the review being done every semester after admission in PhD?
  • Has the PhD thesis been sent to an external examiner or not?

There are many such rules and regulations. After the deficiencies are found in the investigation, show cause notices are issued to the universities and their replies are also seen. If the answer is not satisfactory then action is taken. UGC has issued this first public notice of its kind.
