New Delhi : A Bharat Bandh was called on Wednesday over the Supreme Court’s decision on ‘creamy layer’ in reservation for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (SC-ST). This bandh was called by 21 organizations across the country. The organizations opposed this decision and said that this would harm the basic principles of reservation. The effect of Bharat Bandh was seen in many states of the country. The bandh also received support from many political parties. The effect of Bharat Bandh was seen in many states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan. Many organizations took to the streets in protest against this decision.

Full effect in Jharkhand-Bihar

The full impact of the bandh was seen in Bihar and Jharkhand. In Dumka, activists of Bhim Army, Chhatra Coordination Committee and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) closed the roads and shops. Trucks were blocked at Phoolon Jhano Chowk in the city. In Nalanda, The Great Bhim Army and other organizations called for Bharat Bandh under the Reservation Bachao, Samvidhan Bachao campaign. The movement of vehicles was affected at Hospital Chowk and Devisrai turn in Bihar Sharif. The protesters blocked the Devisrai Chowk, set fire and created a ruckus by climbing on the JCB machine. Jehanabad-Bihar Sharif-Patna-Ranchi Road and Nawada-Bihar Sharif main road were also blocked. The protesters tried to block the road traffic including some national highways at many places in Patna, Hajipur, Darbhanga, Jehanabad and Begusarai districts, along with obstructing the movement of trains at Darbhanga and Buxar railway stations. The police had to resort to mild lathicharge.

UP: Various organizations demonstrated

In Uttar Pradesh, a large number of Bahujan Samaj Party workers and supporters gathered at Ambedkar Chowk in the heart of Lucknow city to join the nationwide strike called by pro-reservation groups. In Prayagraj, Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were deployed in view of the bandh. In Agra, a group of protesters took out a foot march and raised slogans and similar scenes were witnessed in Kanpur. Bus operations in the city also remained normal. There were reports of processions and demonstrations by various organizations in support of reservation in several districts including Unnao, Aligarh, Muzaffarnagar, Sambhal, Jalaun, Etawah, Mathura, Hathras and Gorakhpur. Various organizations demonstrated during the Bharat Bandh in Hapur. Workers of BSP, SP, and Azad Samaj Party took to the streets to protest and blocked the Delhi-Lucknow highway. DM Prerna Sharma said that they are continuously talking to political parties and social organizations and receiving memorandums peacefully. BSP district president Dr AK Kardam also criticized the tampering with the Constitution and demanded to stop it.

Rajasthan: Mixed effect of the shutdown

The ‘Bharat Bandh’ had a mixed effect in Rajasthan. Along with the capital Jaipur, major markets in many cities including Ajmer are closed and traffic on the roads was less compared to other days. The administration had declared a holiday in schools and colleges in many districts including Jaipur as a precautionary measure. The ‘Bandh’ began at nine in the morning and had an impact in many districts of the state. Shops remained closed in major markets. People faced problems due to non-operation of roadways buses at many places. Relatively fewer vehicles were seen on the roads of Jaipur as well. Workers of the organizations that called for the ‘Bandh’ took out rallies.

Punjab, Haryana: No significant effect of the shutdown

The Bharat Bandh did not have any significant impact in Punjab and Haryana on Wednesday. However, protests took place at some places. Essential services were kept out of the purview of the bandh, while public transport services operated normally and shops also remained open. The police said that extensive security arrangements have been made to maintain law and order in both the states. Markets and business establishments remained open normally in Punjab’s Phagwara. However, some educational institutions were kept closed as a precautionary measure.

Odisha: Road, rail services partially affected

Rail and road traffic remained partially disrupted in Odisha on Wednesday. Government offices, banks, commercial establishments and educational institutions functioned normally, police said. Security was beefed up at the state secretariat, key department buildings and other important places in Odisha. Trains were blocked by protesters in Bhubaneswar and Sambalpur while passenger buses did not ply on various routes. Protesters staged demonstrations at various places and blocked several roads, including national highways. Protesters stopped the Visakha Express at Bhubaneswar railway station for some time. They also stopped the Sambalpur-Puri and Sambalpur-Rayagada trains at Khetrarajpur station in Sambalpur. Rail operations were restored after police removed the protesters from the tracks. Road blockades were also reported from Cuttack, Sambalpur, Bolangir, Malkangiri, Sundargarh, Keonjhar and other places.

Assam: Bharat Bandh has no effect

There was no impact of the Bharat Bandh in Assam. Schools, offices and business establishments across the state functioned normally and there was full attendance of workers. Traffic remained normal and long distance buses ran as per schedule. Railway services remained uninterrupted and all trains ran on time.

Opposition parties support the shutdown

The Bharat Bandh was supported by opposition parties. Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal and several other parties in the opposition alliance ‘INDIA’ (Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance) supported the Bharat Bandh called by various Dalit and tribal organizations. Bahujan Samaj Party also extended its support to the bandh.
