Bharat Bandh: Bharat Bandh announced tomorrow, from schools-colleges to markets, know what is open and what is closed?

New Delhi: Dalit and tribal organizations have called for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ on Wednesday to demand strong representation and protection for marginalized communities. The National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organizations (NACDAOR) has released a list of demands which includes justice and equality for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC). Amidst the announcement of Bharat Bandh, common people want to know what will remain closed across the country tomorrow? Let us tell you what will remain open and what will remain closed on Wednesday?

What will remain open?

Dalit organizations have issued an advisory for the common people and appealed that everything should be kept closed from 6 am to 8 pm except medical services, police and fire services. However, government offices, banks, petrol pumps, schools and colleges will function normally. So far no order has been issued to keep them closed. Despite the call for a bandh, public transport and rail services will remain operational.

What will remain closed during Bharat Bandh?

So far, no state government has issued any guidelines on the announcement of Bharat Bandh regarding SC-ST quota. Its effect can definitely be seen in states like Western UP and Rajasthan. In such a situation, the police administration has been put on alert. However, the general public has also been appealed not to come out of their homes. The organizations calling for Bharat Bandh have said that no public transport will run in the country, but no official announcement has been made regarding this. Public transport services may be affected at some places. Apart from this, private offices may be closed at some places.

Why is Bharat Bandh being done?

The SC-ST organisations have taken a contrary view to the recent judgment of a seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court which, according to them, dilutes the nine-judge bench decision in the landmark Indira Sawhney case that established the framework for reservation in India. NACDAOR has urged the government to repeal the judgment as it threatens the constitutional rights of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The organisation is also demanding passage of a new law by Parliament on reservation for SCs, STs and OBCs with inclusion in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.
