Bhagwan Dada’s last interview: This is what the actor said about his/her financial condition, betrayal by friends and sinking fame


Actor, comedian and director Bhagwan Dada was considered the richest star of Indian cinema. People not only talked about his/her pomp and show, but also liked his/her unique acting skills. Bhagwan Dada lived in a 25 room bungalow and had so many cars that he/she used to go to the sets in a new car every day. As long as Bhagwan Dada’s star was shining, everyone saluted him/her and stood by him/her, but when bad times started, not only his/her well-wishers but even his/her friends left him/her. Bhagwan Dada had expressed his/her pain in an interview about his/her bad times, financial condition and the changed attitude of his/her friends, which proved to be his/her last interview. On Bhagwan Dada’s 111th birth anniversary on August 1, we are sharing some of Bhagwan Dada’s words from the same interview. he/she gave this interview to ‘Filmfare’ in the year 2001 and he/she died on February 4, 2002 at the age of 88. Bhagwan Dada’s condition had become such that even if he/she went from one corner to another, he/she would forget the work for which he/she had gone there.

‘When I go from one corner to another, I forget’

When Bhagwan Dada died, he/she did not have any disease, but the effect of increasing age was clearly visible. Describing his/her condition, Bhagwan Dada had said, ‘Now I have become very old. When I go from one corner of the room to another, I forget why I went there. Now my condition is like ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’. Bhagwan Dada was then living in his/her house in Dadar with his/her unmarried daughter. The family of his/her younger son Sachin also lived with him/her. Sachin was an assistant cameraman in ad films, but he/she left his/her job to take care of his/her father Bhagwan Dada.

Worked in 600 films, used to copy Amitabh and Govinda’s dance

Bhagwan Dada started working during the era of silent films. he/she did about 600 films in his/her career. he/she also produced about 27 films. People still remember Bhagwan Dada for the film ‘Albela’, in which the song ‘Bholi Surat Dil Ke Khote’ filmed on him/her was a big hit. his/her dancing style was also very much liked. There was a little Bhangra mix in Bhagwan Dada’s dance. It is said that even Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda used to copy Bhagwan Dada’s dancing style.

Worked in a textile mill, left studies for acting

Bhagwan Dada’s father used to work in a cloth mill. Seeing his/her father, he/she also started working in a cloth mill. This was at a time when he/she had not even stepped into films. After this he/she came to Mumbai. Bhagwan Dada may have worked in a mill, but he/she was very fond of working in films. For this reason, he/she left his/her studies after the fourth class. he/she would leave school and run away to watch movies and would get beaten up by his/her father.

‘Albela’ had changed the fate, but with the passage of time the bungalow and all the cars were sold

Bhagwan Dada started his/her acting career in 1930. he/she was paired with actress Fearless Nadia. Then Bhagwan Dada made the film ‘Albela’, which changed the direction of his/her career. This film ran in theatres for 50 weeks. After this, Bhagwan Dada got a flood of films as well as wealth. Everyone kept looking at his/her wealth and splendor. But when the wheel of time turned, wealth and fame all went out of his/her hands. The bungalow was sold, all the cars were sold. Seeing his/her condition, even those people who had borrowed money from him/her avoided him/her. Even friends changed. They did not even look at Bhagwan Dada.

This is what Bhagwan Dada said about the betrayal of friends

Bhagwan Dada was deeply hurt by the betrayal and change in behaviour of his/her friends. But he/she accepted it as his/her bad luck and said, ‘Leave it. Forgive everyone. I was lost in the dazzling jungle of showbiz. However, my financial condition was not so bad that even the basic needs of the family were not fulfilled.’

Only these stars stood with us in difficult times

To help Bhagwan Dada financially, the Cine Artists Association sent him/her Rs 3,000 every month, while the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association sent him/her Rs 5,000 every month. There was a time when the big stars of the film industry were friends of Bhagwan Dada, but they deserted him/her in his/her difficult times. Only Dilip Kumar, Johnny Lever, Satyen Kappu, Ram Mohan, Raza Murad and Sunil Dutt remained in touch with him/her and kept asking about his/her well-being.

Bhagwan Dada gave shelter to Muslim artists and bore their expenses

Bhagwan Dada was such that when Hindu-Muslim riots broke out across the country during the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, he/she gave shelter to Muslim artists in his/her house. he/she even took the responsibility of their food and drink. But when his/her condition worsened, he/she had to spend his/her last days in a chawl. In this sorrow, he/she drowned himself in alcohol. he/she died of a heart attack on 4 February 2002.
