Known as one of the most sacred of the 51 Shakti Peethas on earth, Kalighat Kali Temple is quite famous due to its history and ancient legends. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali and is located on the banks of the Adi Ganga, a small canal that connects to the Hooghly River. Due to which this canal has been named Adi Ganga. It is said that the tongue of the idol of Maa Kali installed in the Kalighat temple is made of gold.

Let us tell you, the temple is open from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm. On Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday it is open from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm and again from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

The present temple building was built in the 19th century and is 200 years old. The idol of Goddess Kali with three big eyes, four hands and a long protruding tongue is made of sandstone in this temple, which was carved by the twin saints, Atmaram Giri and Brahmananda Giri. The tongue and eyes of the idol are made of gold.

The idol located in the Kalighat Kali temple is not similar to the usual idols of the goddess at other places where Kali is worshipped. The goddess holds a scimitar in her hands, symbolizing divine knowledge and the severed head of the demon king Shumbha, symbolizing human ego. Every year a large number of devotees come to visit this temple.

Kalighat Kali Temple It is considered one of the most important Shakti Peethas among the 51 Peethas spread across India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The mythology behind the temple relates to Shiva’s Rudra Tandava, when he/she was enraged by the self-immolation of his/her wife Sati after a dispute with his/her father over not being invited to a puja ceremony at his/her father’s place.

It is said that Shiva lifted the burnt body of Sati while performing Tandava and that is when various parts of the goddess’s body fell on the earth. Sati’s right toe had fallen in Kalighat and it was here that a temple was later built and the presiding deity here is called Kalika, after whom the city of Kolkata was named.

By Air: Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is the nearest airport. A taxi can be hired from the airport to reach the temple. The temple is located at a distance of about 25 kilometers from the airport and takes 50 minutes to an hour to reach.
By bus: After coming to Kolkata, you can take any bus going towards South Kolkata, which will take you through Syama Prasad Mukherjee Road, which is near Temple Road. After which, get down at Kalighat bus station and from there you can walk towards the temple by walking through Kali Mandir Road.
by train: Howrah Junction is the nearest railway station which is connected to all the major cities of India through rail network. To reach the temple one can hire a cab or travel by local or mini bus. Along with this, the nearest metro station to Kalighat Kali Temple is Kalighat Station from South Exit and Jatin Das Park Metro Station from North Exit.
