Before Kandahar, flights have been hijacked many times in India; once a truck driver had imprisoned the passengers


There is a lot of controversy about Netflix’s multi-starrer series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. Users are talking about this series on social media. Let us tell you, this series is based on the hijack of Indian Airlines’ Kathmandu-Delhi flight. 25 years ago today, Indian Airlines flight IC-814 took off from Kathmandu to Delhi on 24 December 1999. There were 190 people on board this plane, including 179 passengers and 11 crew members.

In January 1971, two boys hijacked the flight

Indian Airlines flight Domestic Fokker F27 which was also called “Ganga” going from Srinagar to Jammu was hijacked by two boys Hashim Qureshi and Ashraf Qureshi on 30 January 1971. After which this flight was taken to Lahore. Let us tell you, during that time the then Foreign Minister of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto reached Lahore and met the hijackers.

After which the hijackers were persuaded to release the crew members and passengers. Later the Indian government sought permission from Pakistan to bring the flight back to India, but Pakistani authorities refused to give permission. Later the Pakistani security forces set the plane on fire.

In which crew member Neerja Bhanot saved the lives of 359 people and became a martyr.

Indian Airlines flight IC-423 from Delhi to Amritsar was hijacked by Sikh separatists on 29 September 1981 and taken to Lahore airport. This flight took off from Delhi-Palam Airport to Amritsar-Raja Sansi Airport. There were 111 passengers and 6 crew members in the flight. The purpose of Sikh separatists to hijack the flight was to demand a separate Sikh homeland Khalistan. Let us tell you, Akshay Kumar’s film ‘Bell Bottom’ released in the year 2021 is based on this hijack.

On 27 March 1993, Indian Airlines Flight 439 was hijacked while going from Delhi to Madras. The hijacker claimed that he/she was tied with explosives. There were 192 passengers and 13 crew members in this flight. Later this hijacker was identified as Hari Singh, a truck driver. he/she was not happy with the Hindu-Muslim riots going on in the country at that time, due to which he/she planned to hijack the plane. Hari Singh later surrendered.

On 24 December 1999, Indian Airlines flight IC-814 flying from Kathmandu was hijacked by masked terrorists. It was later diverted to Kandahar in Afghanistan, which was under the control of the Taliban at that time. Let us tell you, all the passengers and crew members remained hostages of the hijackers for a week.

At that time, the hijackers were demanding the release of three terrorists (Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, Maulana Masood Azhar and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar) who were imprisoned in India. The then government had accepted this demand. This was the biggest hijack in the history of India, which shook everyone.
